A mother I am working with called today with almost the exact same story.
Baby was born with intestines outside of body, reduced, but necessitated
IV's, tubes, etc. Mom pumped from the beginning and baby had received only
her milk until 2 weeks ago.
Baby feeds poorly at breast and with bottle. Tongue bunches up and milk
pools in the side of the mouth and dribbles out. Two weeks ago, I suggested
seeing PT/OT earlier than at 3 months. Was seen today and given exercises
for aversion. Tongue is bunching up too. About 1 1/2 weeks ago, baby
developed bloody stools. Pediatrician suggested stopping bfing and starting
Nutramigen. Therefore Mom stopped pumping and started feeding Nutramigen by
bottle. Mom is about to throw in the towel completely, but I suggested going
off dairy and resuming pumping/bfing after exercises. Mom's question is that
she has a freezer full of milk--but it is milk pumped while she was on dairy.
Is there some way to treat the milk? Any/all suggestions and comments
welcomed. My question is what is the composition of Nutramigen? Is it not
dairy based? Don't know if mom could handle a very strict diet. TIA
