Hi Cindy,
As a personal anecdote, both my boys had reflux. The first son may have been
dairy related but I don't know for sure. His Ped (who was a REAL jerk) kept
telling my that he just had an overactive gag reflex. Well, by the time my
son was almost 2 yrs, he was losing weight, was refusing to eat, and had
started regressing developmentally. I changed Peds and found someone who had
a clue, diagnosed severe reflux (borderline surgery vs meds) tried meds first
and was cured. That son still has eating probs. (Gee, I wonder why?) And he
is now 10 yrs old.
Son #2 did the same spitting up all over the place thing, so we tried him on
meds first (reglen) with no effect. Tried eliminating dairy, and Voila!
Cured! Of course anytime I had the slightest bit of dairy he would start
spitting up all over the place! (an I mean a tiny bit!) I had to read
lables! What a pain. By the time he hit 12 mo, I started testing with the
dairy again and found he could tolerate very small amounts. Now, at 21 mo, I
can eat whatever dairy I like, and he is fine (still BF Lots!).
On a professional note, I have had several clients whose babies spitting up
either ceased completely or mostly by cutting out dairy. I have also seen
"Colicky" babies imporve dramatically when mom cut out the dairy.
Results are usually seen a few days (2-7) after cuttiong dairy out of the
diet, but I reccommend that moms keep it out of their diet for a LONG time.
Some start testing the dairy at 12 mo, as I did, and some have no probs,
some do.
Hope this helps!
