Jessica has informed us regarding a presentation by Abbott regarding
lutein. This was added to Similac recently to dupe the public into thinking
that the formula is "closer" to breastmilk and obtain a marketing advantage
over other infant formulas. It is interesting to note that the FDA
considers lutein as not only a food additive but also a dye. Lutein
brightens the look of thermally processed foods so they do not look brown
or gray, making them more appealing to the eye. Abbott has determined that
lutein in infant formula is GRAS (generally recognized as safe) but the FDA
has not. I bet this information was not mentioned in the Abbott sponsored
lecture that Jessica told us about! Yes, lutein is important to the eye but
it is also important to the bottom line of Abbott to make sure that their
product is visually appealing to mothers. I doubt if little babies care
what color their food is. I too would love to see this lecture. Jessica, if
you have the notice regarding the lutein presentation, please send it to me
for Code monitoring purposes.
