Hi Lactnetters,

I have a challenging case that I need your collective wisdom on. This mom is
tandem nursing her 10 month old infant and 31 month old child. She initially
didn't want to wean the older child but wanted to cut down his nursing.
Now she is not sure what to do. She says that her older child would rather
nurse than anything in the world and that he nurses more than her infant. He
also screams until she nurses him. She has tried all the usual tricks for
weaning him down a bit and they have not worked. She is becoming very
frustrated and she is concerned because this child is now 31 months and
weighs 45 pounds and is very strong. The infant is getting more active and
they bump into each other at the breast and are crying and fighting at the
breast. She has read what is available from LLLI and is also a member. She
said that she has posed this question on a Tandem nursing web page and
didn't get much support. She is getting very frustrated and feels "nasty and
impatient with all this nursing". I have not had any experience with this
type of situation and told her that I would pose this question to this most
wonderful list of knowledgeable people. Any help that you can give us will
be appreciated.
Thanks so much,

Jodi E. Smart RN, IBCLC
