Hello,

I have been an LC for about 20 years, and have never seen a milk fistula until now. Mom has been advised to wean due to milk leaking from the surgical site. I have seen moms with milk leaking from abscess sites who went on to breastfeed, and abcess healed.

Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing? Baby is only 10 weeks old, and mom does not want to stop breastfeeding. Will the fistula heal on its own? Is there a chance of infection? How can she encourage this to dry up?

Thanks!!
Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
