OH, Deanne!

Does your daughter have ideas of ways we can help those babies in Azerbaijan
orphanages? What can we do to help?

I've always thought that I had plenty to do right here in the US, in my own
community even, to help with sad-story babies - lord knows I've seen enough
pathetic ones! But as I grow older, and as my own children start to be grown
up now, I find that these babies in such miserable circumstances as you
describe are calling to me louder and louder.

If you (or others on this list) know of ways to help, please let me know. I
just can't bear to know that there are so many in such great need, while we
have so much here.

Slightly off-topic, so respond privately if more appropriate: do others of
you who are into the granny years (well, I'm not there yet, but headed that
way!), or at least past the little-kids-at-home years, find yourselves
opening your hearts up wider and wider to other people's children? I find
this kind of disconcerting, personally, and a bit distracting as well.
Always thought of myself as striving to be compassionate, but not a
quivering bowl of mush; seems as I get older, I am getting "softer". Not
necessarily a good thing!

Cathy Bargar, RN, IBCLC Ithaca NY (PS - Deanne, you must be so proud of your
daughter! My children are headed into similar service work, and it makes me
think I've done *something* right!)
