I have a question regarding the recent FDA ban of domperidone in the USA.
How does it affect this statement made in the FAQ on the IBLCE website?
Can we still share information about the drug, must we wait for the
mother to initiatiate the subject, and what exactly can we say?
I have searched the Lactnet archives but have not yet been able to
find a definitive answer.

Q:
An IBCLC in my community routinely recommends domperidone for
increasing milk supply and she provides information to mothers on how
to purchase it on the internet. I think this is prescribing, which is
an ethics issue. She maintains she is "providing information", which
is within our scope of practice. Who is correct?
A:
As long as the IBCLC tells the client to check with her primary
health care provider first, and reports her recommendations to that
health care provider in a timely manner, it probably is just providing
information. Without it, she is prescribing.

FDA Warns Against Women Using Unapproved Drug, Domperidone, to
Increase Milk Production

The letters issued by FDA today stated that all drug products
containing domperidone (whether compounded or not) violate the Federal
Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) because they are unapproved new
drugs and misbranded. In addition, distribution within the U.S., or
importation of domperidone-containing products, violates the law. FDA
informed the warning letter recipients that further violations of the
Act may result in enforcement actions including seizure and
injunction.
