<<Women mentally challenged and unable comprehend the baby's needs>>

I recently worked with a young mom, 23yo, who has the mental abilities of
maybe an 8yo. She is breastfeeding with great success. Her mother assists
her with knowing when to change diapers, and how to dress her, but
breastfeeding is the one thing she is able to do without much assistance or
encouragement. She nurses at night with no complaints, sleeps when the baby
sleeps, and is just generally a good "grass roots mother."

It was funny, as the social worker wanted her to breastfeed, due to "filthy
home conditions". As the baby reached about 4 months of age, this same
social worker wanted her to quit breastfeeding. I asked if the same "filthy
home conditions" still applied. Yes, they did. So, why did we want to
encourage her to take the baby off of the breast, and have to still worry
about getting clean bottles and mixing formula properly? I still couldn't
figure out why the SW wanted her to wean the baby from the breast!

for what it's worth, the grandmother is thrilled that her daughter is
breastfeeding, it takes a huge load off of her. She doesn't worry about
nutrition, health, formula concentrations, having to take the baby at
night...

Best wishes,
Sam Doak
