 Hi Jaye
Did anyone offer any suggestions? Is the mum cue feeding? If she is
scheduling, using a dummy (pacifier) or otherwise putting off feeds, the
warm weather would be enough to reduce output. In which case I am sure
you'll encourage mum to offer more feeds and reassure her that these might
be very short. Six to eight pale wet cloth nappies in 24 hrs is enough -
perhaps baby was putting out more than this in the cooler weather? I have
trouble imagining a mother who uses cloth nappies using a strict schedule,
though, so I'd also look at the possibility of urinary tract infection.
This can make urine smell/look strong and the baby can appear afebrile -
although mum says she is sweating a lot so perhaps the warm weather is
masking a low grade fever?
Hope you sort this mystery out.
Cheers

Subject: [LACTNET] Question about fluids and 5 mo old

Hi All,

Question from one of my clients that at this moment I just don't know how to
answer. So am looking for input.

Please e-mail privately and to the list.

Thanks! Jaye

I'm concerned that baby is not getting enough fluids. She doesn't seem to be
peeing as much as normal which I notice pretty quickly because she's in
cloth diapers. She's gaining weight just fine - She is at 17 lbs as of last
week (5 months old). I not sure where her fluids are going. She does sweat a
lot, so could that be the cause of less urine? Also, her urine smells
stronger lately. Because of the
summer heat, should I give her water or something?
