Emergency surgery, vacation away from home (postoperative, with a new baby?
not my own idea of fun) and Christmas are events that jump out here.  If I
were her doctor I would want to tie her by one foot to her bedpost...except
for a walk every day.  Being a wimp and getting some rest might be better
than heroism here.  I remember a similar situation some months ago where
the mother struggled on against huge odds for months and months but
apparently never actually slowed down.
I'm with the people who suggest weaning on the R side only, since she
evidently has plenty of milk.
