Dear Marley,
Your case gives examples of how sensitive newborns are. There are so many
possible factors that could have depressed this baby's CNS, but the good news
is that they are all temporary. Now what we don't know is how long does it
take to wear off? Does it matter how many factors the baby is affected by on
how long it takes to wear off? What is important is to trust the baby and mom
and not rush to treatment. Dr. Jake may post this before mine gets out there,
but he has a great guideline on when to supplement and with what.
There were many interventions even after birth that could have added insult
to injury, the suctioning, glucose tests and some separation. These could
have extended the time this baby needed to recover.
I would have waited a little longer before worrying, and then started with
expressing the mom's breast for colostrum to be the first feed.
The documentation of this case and some studies already out there could be
beneficial for teaching the staff the risks of interventions on the newborn.
But reassure them that time is the best friend to these babies to recover.
