Can anyone provide me with the latest research on iron supplementation in a breastfed baby? I have a mom with a 16 month old who has lower iron levels.
It was at 9. something. One question posed is can iron supplementation cause a loss of blood due to intestinal fissures, as do infants fed cow's milk? In an older copy of Breastfeeding
and Human Lactation it states, " Also, breastfed infants do not risk loss of iron as do infants fed cow's milk; the later may experience microhemorrhages of
the bowel as a result of mucosal damage by nonhuman milk (Woodruff et al., 1977). I felt like I had read somewhere that iron supplementation can cause
blood loss through the intestines. I'm not finding that in newer things that I'm reading. Thanks, Sue Manore, IBCLC, LLLL
