Beloved Lactnetters,
I need some advice on how to better educate parents
about those little bitty battery-operated pumps
(almost always Evenflo brand) that are turning up at
so many bedsides, and in such cute little gift bags.

Spoke with a mom and dad recently, mom going home,
baby staying overnight in NICU for observation.  Mom
using hospital-grade pump, getting about 25-30 cc per
pumping session (yes!).  I discussed possible
short-term pump rental (in which I have NO financial
interest), in the event that the baby's stay was
extended.  Father chimes in that they have a pump
already...so I ask which one, and he pulls out an
Evenflo.

Since parents were anticipating a short separation, I
said that this pump *might* suit their needs.  I did
explain how such a small motor in the unit, whether
powered by batteries or A/C adapter, would not be as
effective at emptying the breast over an extended time
as the motor of the hospital pump.  I also gave Mom a
manual adapter unit for her pump parts, and encouraged
her to at least try it.  She and Dad, in particular,
seemed very skeptical.

I would rather have a mother using a quality manual
pump than an ineffective battery-operated pump any
time.  To be honest, I have yet to hear that a mother
was satisfied with her battery-operated pump, yet they
seem to be everywhere.  Anyone out there have any
snappy phrases or analogies about these pumps?
Anything else I could have/should have done or said?
