"The nurses at my hospital had an inservice by the Nestle rep yesterday
stating that Good Start has 100% Whey ... Nurses were impressed....What is
the rationale for [whey] in that formula?..." Loretta Haycook, RN, IBCLC

(1) Whey is traditionally a "trash" material leftover from dairy processing
that companies started getting fined for when they dumped it in rivers. So,
the number one reason for making a formula out of it is to get people to pay
AND take away what would otherwise cost the company to dispose of. This is
absolutely brilliant, from the company's point of view.

(2) The second reason is that anything different has its own sales niche, so
it makes a company more competitive to pitch a sell that's a little
different that the two more popular companies in that market are already
offering. Since formula companies aren't going to offer the right protein
anyway, it hardly matters which protein they offer. Remember MBF--meat
based formula?

(3) If some babies are seemingly less irritated by whey formula than by
regular cow's milk formula, at least by surface appearances, it would be a
great stroke of PR luck for the company, and we could call it the third
reason.

We could get people to get excited about buying canned baby poop if we
described it properly (It's predigested! Contains enzymatically processed
food components!). But people would have to agree not to think too hard nor
question the sell.
