to help mom latch baby who was fussy and not attempting to
latch well."

What would help? Try skin to skin and bedding in, and lots of *calm*
support for the mother...sometimes backing off like this and taking the
overt pressure off has results in a very short time. If she now doesn't
want to breastfeed then clearly the baby needs something - but it still
doesn't preclude skin-to-skin etc.
