Dear Lactnet Friends:

Tricia Shamblin said it perfectly, " I just tell them to put the baby on
their breast and let it nurse as long as it wants to. When he comes off on
his own, burp him and if he's done it's fine. If the baby seems to want
more, put him on the other side. Opinions?
"

Babies eat the way we do, we pick and choose and set our own rhythm. It
doesn't help a mother to give her a pattern to impose on the baby. There is
a possibility for disagreement and conflict, plus the mother has to
remember things. The relationship will provide its own answers.

warmly,
