Ellen says,
Valerie's statement and comparison to our car mechanics. there =
certainly can be a comparison. I have faith in my mechanic and I trust =
his professionalism, which will first determine that I have a brake =
problem, and thus supply me with brakes instead of sending me down the =
road which is both time consuming and probably more costly.
AKKK -- this is such a sticky wicket! We just bought a used Lincoln Town Car
- very used, very cheap. (142,000 miles if anyone is interested). One of
the problems is a funky mirror on the driver's side. Not sure what the problem
is, but it IS funky. (Proves my rule that the more bells & whistles, the more
problems). Anyway, Bob (my dh) called a couple of Lincoln dealers to see if
they could just replace the mirror. Yes, both could -- they'd have to order
it, but they could get it and put it in. The point is, we could get it done at
one stop. We didn't have to go to an auto-ware store to get the mirror and
then to the Lincoln dealer to put it in. Quite a bit more convenient.

All that to say -- do I carry herbs & the like? I have pumps. A very few
pumps. I have slings. A very few slings. I have pillows that are specially
made for me by someone in FL. A very few pillows. I don't carry herbs/gentian
violet/More Milk Plus/gripe water -- though I could. Why? Probably because
this is treading on "prescriptive" territory -- though I WILL recommend same
and then show the moms what it looks like and send them to Whole Foods or W
heaton Pharmacy or whereever (I have NO financial interest in those stores) to get
them.

I struggle with this issue of selling/renting. I see everyone's POV. I HATE
selling stuff in this venue. If I were a retailer, seller of books -- I'd be
wonderful. I do enjoy retail -- but not as an LC. But I struggle with the
fact that when I've recommended herbal galactogogues, suggested the mom can get
them at Whole Foods or Kuhn's and told them the very shelf they are on -- and
then call them three days later to discover they haven't "gotten there yet,"
I am more than frustrated. Is her lack of commitment -- inability to get
there -- no baby sitter -- laziness -- struggle to do everything a new mom needs
to do??? Would it have been a heck of a lot easier if I just carried the dang
stuff and she could have gotten it from me?

Sigh. This is really one of those issues that I'm not sure we're gonna come
to grips on....
