Dear Wise Ones,

I could use help with something that is puzzling. So far no one has identified the cause of a nipple bump. I have permission to post.

Mother has a painful round bump on her nipple that measures about 0.5 cm in diameter and is raised about 0.25 cm above surrounding skin at the highest point. The skin on the bump is much lighter than the surrounding skin (bump is pink, nipple and areola are brown). It never changes in size and is always painful to the touch, for example, when she puts a bra on. Baby is 10 days old, but the painful bump became raised and painful and the color changed during the first trimester of pregnancy. A nipple shield helps it to be less painful, but it sure would be nice to figure out the cause.

Thank you for any ideas you can share,

Carolyn Donohoe Mather, MAS, RDN, LD, IBCLC
