This is the reply I received from my note to Cliff's. It just made me
madder.

I'm replying now!

Dear Ms Fowler,

Thank you for your interest in Cliff's Amusement Park and your recent
inquiry about our policy on breastfeeding. As a family-owned business since
1959, Cliff's has encouraged breastfeeding on park property for over 46
years. We are strong advocates of breastfeeding - there is nothing
healthier a mother could do for her young child. However, for the safety
and comfort of all of our guests, we ask mothers to breast feed in a manner
that does not upset or offend others, including young children who are
visiting our park as guests.

Concerning the June 12, 2005 incident you referred to, we received a number
of guest complaints that one mother was breast-feeding her child in a very
public manner. Some of our guests felt it was highly inappropriate for
their children to be witnessing this act. Due to these and other guest's
concerns, a female member of our management team approached this mother,
asking her to feed her child in a manner that was more respectful of other
guests. In this way, she could have continued to breastfeed her child while
our other guests continued to enjoy their visit to Cliff's.

She left the park grounds several hours later on her own accord, not because
we asked her to leave.

Cliff's is a family amusement park. It is our commitment and our duty to
provide a safe, comfortable, family-friendly atmosphere for all of our
guests. Again, thank you for your interest in Cliff's Amusement Park. If
you have any additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to call
our office at (505) 881-9373.

Sincerely,

Linda Hays
Vice President, Cliff's Amusement Park

Subject: Breastfeeding at Cliff's

I spent HOURS at "Uncle Cliff's" as a child. And even more hours, and
lots of money, at Cliff's as a teen. And now I hear one of my childhood
memories has insulted a mother, one who was simply doing what is
natural, breastfeeding her child.

It is NOT OK to tell a breastfeeding mother to cover up or go feed her
child in the restroom. A mother who is providing milk to her child is
not doing something "dirty" or "nasty." New Mexico Law protects women
who are breastfeeding from being told to go elsewhere, or to use a
blanket. Cliff's needs to educate their employees about this law, and
then everyone needs to follow it. Women don't need to go somewhere
private to breastfeed and it is not OK for a baby to eat their lunch in
the toilet!

It doesn't matter if a person is offended by a woman breastfeeding. I'm
offended daily by folks around me. I'm offended by people who eat with
their mouth open, those with racist tattoos, and couples who need to
rent a room. I'm sure that if Cliff's is the same as it was when I
attended weekly through the summer, there are no end to real offenses
happening in various locations around the park--and yet your staff is
going to worry because someone is offended over a mother feeding her
baby? Get real. I'm far more offended by a crying baby, or one with an
artificial baby nipple in their mouth, than I am by a baby being soothed
by the best his mother has to offer.

Please, make a public apology. And educate your employees on the law in
New Mexico. Leave breastfeeding women alone!
