I began organizing medical missions to Haiti about over ten years ago and have been to Haiti on missions 12 times.
We never take formula.  Of course, we do everything to encourage breastfeeding in Haiti.  The breastfeeding rate is very high.  One of the few things the Haitian government does correctly is to encourage breastfeeding. Rarely, and usually due to misinformation, does a Haitian woman not breastfeed.
To take formula toi Haiti and encourage its use, even in "emergencies" is self-defeating.
Treat the Social Concerns minister gently.  We have to admonish our own mission's physicians and healthcare professionals on this matter, and they should already know better.Frank J. Nice, RPh, DPA, CPHP
