Teri Lind asked for help with a baby with a high palate.  In May or June i
had the same question and was helped by several Lactnetters.  Maybe they
will come to the rescue again!  I will give you a brief rundown on the
situation of the woman i counseled.  The baby was 3 weeks old and nursing
with a nipple shield when she came to me with sore (open) nipples. The
mother did not want to use the shield anylonger.  Her midwife (insurance
paid assistance up to 2 months post-natal) said she needed a pump because
the baby wasn't getting enuf milk.  This midwife recommends pumps often
without looking at the real problem.  I showed the mother how to use the
Dancer Hold, the Football hold, head higher than body, and gave her a
Habermann feeder (all these things recommended to me by Lactnetters).  The
mother basically found her own solutions and only last week returned the
pump, after 5 months.  The baby is now on the breast, but also supplemented
with mares' milk in the Habermann.
I admire this  young woman's quiet persistence and resolve in a community
where most women would have quit at the first irritation.  But then, I
admire all  women who persist despite adversity!
