What a wonderful opportunity! I was thinking that maybe, if you wouldn't
mind sharing what you actually present and how the girls react to it, it
could be used by others of us, who could then volunteer to do the same at
our local schools.

One thought I had was to have some slides or posters showing women nursing,
with at least quite a few of them doing so discreetly. Moms from a wide
variety of races, ages, nationalities, etc. would be good. Maybe even a
slide or two of an adoptive mother nursing a baby who is a different race
from her own, would add some interest. Also, I wonder if you should address
the issue of the girls' mothers and whether they breastfed. I would think
there would be some who might get defensive if they felt that their mothers
were being criticized for bottle-feeding, so I would try to get the point
across that nothing you are saying is intended as a criticizm of anyone who
did not breastfeed. I would also add some facts about how many women don't
breastfeed because they do not have the support and information that they
need, but that such support and information is available which, of course,
you can provide them with information about.

As far as shooting myths, if you asked for them to share reasons that their
mothers didn't breastfeed (I would think a few of them would at least have
some idea) I would bet it would bring up some pretty interesting topics!
Perhaps you could do the old trick of passing out pencils and papers and
asking them to write down any questions they have, anonymously, at the
beginning of the lecture. That always seems to bring up some questions that
the kids would be too embarassed to ask.

Another thing I would do is comment on how the thought of a baby suckling
their breast might seem pretty weird to them, at this point, but that, when
it is their own baby, whom they love, it is perfectly natural. One last
thought is that it would be good to provide them with something to take home
with them, like some kind of pamphlet. Those who come away with a positive
feeling might even put such a thing away to save for when their turn to be
mothers come.

I am really excited for you!
