Hi All,
Talked to one of our WIC PCs today. SHe has a mom (who I suggested that she
{the PC} have call me) who has gained approx 80lbs water weight with her
pregnancy. She is due in June (the 10th, I believe) and she has a rather
complex set of problems going on. Remember, this is 2nd hand info, and I am
hoping for more details from the mom.
OK: Mom is on Altenolol for heart probs (hole in her heart at birth) 25mg a
day. Drs wanted her to take 50mg, but they told her that when the baby was
born that bc of this med, it would stop breathing, so she agreed only to
take the lowest dose of 25mg. She also has had varicose veins burst during
this pregnancy, and she is taking Bactrin (an antibiotic) for something (PC
didn't know what for). Currently, according to the Dr, the baby (4wks
pre-due date) is approx 10.5lbs. Dr told her she may not have to take the
Altenolol after birth of baby.
My questions concern the extreme gain of water weight. THis is a huge
amount of edema and I am concerned that this mom may have problems BF
because of it, ie: no milk supply, extremem engorgement. What are the
expected potential problems within this scenario? What type of drugs could
she take to help reduce this edema without compromising her milk supply?
This mom is commited to BF, calling all ABM "slop, garbage" etc.
Just want to be prepared...
TIA!
