I am, unfortunately, still seeing these books at the
bedside in the hospital where I work. Yuck. I have
found it helpful to open a discussion with Mom by
saying something like, "The lactation community has
concerns about this because..." and follow with an
explanation of newborn physiology (small size of
stomach, goal of doubling birth weight in 6 mos.,
etc.), establishment of abundant milk supply, and the
mechanisms of supply and demand. With many parents,
their eyes sort of fly open when they hear
this...."Wow! I didn't know that!" Pointing out that
a clock-driven, infreqent, infant feeding strategy
goes AGAINST the physiologic needs of the infant seems
to be an effective approach so far.
