I may not have as much experience as some of you out there, but I have
virtually never seen slow weight gain as the isolated or only sign of
something bad going on when a mom was being watched really well by a good
doctor and a good LC. That latter part of that convoluted sentence assumes
a lot, but I have this discussion with my officešs IBCLC (who actually is
the best LC Išve ever seen in spite of having only a few years under her
belt) because she has colleagues who try to convince her that we have to
worry a lot.
Babies gain weight in unique patterns and close observation allows you to
relax about the numbers. A baby gaining weight slowly but doing very well
needs observation. A baby gaining slowly but not looking good is a
different matter altogether. Who the hell convinced us that slow weight
gain would lead to irreversible brain injury?
