Diane... my oldest is 30. I learned to breastfeed effectively by trial and error and a really deep commitment and stubbornness that I was going to make it work. 

I learned to hand express mostly by trial and error, too... although it's possible that the only breastfeeding book I had at the time may have covered it to some degree. The book was The Complete Book of Breastfeeding by Sally Wendkos Olds and Marvin Eiger.

You can probably guess that I learned to nurse lying down by trial and error, too... and out of sheer exhaustion! 
 
Truly, I think the key to success in all of this - and something I see missing with some/many of the moms I encounter today - was a deep determination to make breastfeeding work for my baby and me.  There might have just been some dumb luck mixed in with my success, too.  LOL.
