I've heard "older" nurses say that in the past all babies had their frenulum cut after birth, while still in the delivery room, right along with the circ. I can recall seeing the tool with the delivery room instruments that they used to lift the tongue (looks like a heart at the end of a stick) although I don't recall seeing frenotomys done after every birth. I've been an RN for 20 years. I wonder where that practice arose from? Anyone know if they were done so routinely in the past?
I wonder if Dr's began to realize that procedure was being overdone and so generally quit doing them all, not looking on a case by case basis whether there was a physical need. The general thinking became "they don't need to be done". This has gotten passed down to the younger Dr's and now few know how to do it (never seen it done, never were instructed) or still believe what their mentor had said "they don't need to be done".
