Dear Kym,
I've had two infants in my practice die (both from serious congenital heart
defects). It is very distressing. In both cases I also went to the house
and the funeral to offer support. It meant a lot to the mothers. Remember,
breastfeeding heals many things, but it can't fix everything. Because of
modern medicine and generally good public health, we lose relatively few
babies these days. This is very different from even our grandmothers' day,
when most families lost children. Because it is a rare event, the shock is
intense and disturbing. Be very gentle with yourself and remember that you
were there to try to help. The baby's death doesn't negate your service.
