I'm not sure any research has ever actually backed up the "why" double pumping seems to make a difference but here's a more recent research report that does support the concept:

Jones, E., Dimmock, P.W. & Spencer, S.A. (2001). A randomised controlled trial to compare methods of milk expression after preterm delivery. Archives of Diseases of the Child Fetal Neonatal Edition, 85(2), F91-95.

<< Dear friends,

Either nothing has been said on this or I use inappropriate search terms, but I
can't find what I search for in the archives.
It has been said that simultane pumping will not only reduce time needed, but
also boost prolactin levels, thus increasing amount of milk expressed. Does
anyone know any references for this?

Warmly,
