I can't believe I am writing to you all wonderful people again, but something
else has come up. They say things come in threes, well here is my third
problem this week: Rumor has it that a mom came into a local hospital here
with a 6 weeks old infant that had been "sleeping in bed with her". Infant
was dead on arrival. Rumor has it that mom "rolled over on the baby and
suffocated it". Now, no one knows the facts, but this has spread like
wildfire through our unit. I just gave a class promoting moms and babies
sleeping together in the hospital bed (provided mom is not heavily medicated)
using James McKennas sleep work. Now all the nurses are saying "I'm not going
to put any baby in bed with the mother!" We are having a gripe session on the
28th of the month and I was warned that this was one of the things the nurses
would bring up as it happened over the weekend when I was off duty. Another
breastfeeding advocate staff nurse called to warn me. Any suggestions besides
#1: we don't know the facts #2: So don't jump to any conclusions #3:
research shows mothers do not roll over on their babies #4: Could this be
SIDS or infanticide by a severely postpartum depressed mother (God forbid on
both!). HELP! TIA. Loni Denman
