Good evening all, from snowy Vermont.

Well, Cindy, thank you for getting to the punch line before I logged on.
This is from our WELCOME message:

NEVER post anything on Lactnet
regarding**EMAIL VIRUS WARNINGS* or warnings of any kind of internet hoax,
or whatever. Most are FAKES and spam themselves, so please DO NOT
post on these subjects on Lactnet. If you'd like to stay on
top of these incidents yourself, we recommend that you consult the "hoax"
section at http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html

If you want to know more about confirmed viruses, the same source offers a
virus information database at
http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACVirusDatabase.html (be sure to scroll down a
ways; the database itself comes after the prefatory intro).

Please, do NOT ever post these messages on Lactnet.

I have been updating the welcome message now for 3 years. I have been making
it better, as I go, and I will add a few more addresses that Cindy has given
me, to make things clearer. And thanks for the warning about viruses in
EMAIL attachments. Everyone should have a virus scanner on their system.
And no one should be attaching things to LACTNET anyhow, as this is against
the list rules.

As for putting appropriate headings and subject titles, this is a good idea.
However, the archival search will pick up the words in the messages anyhow,
even if they are not in the title, unless you search only in the subject, ie

Search * in Lactnet where subject contains HIV

Then, if the subject title does *not* contain the word HIV, the message will
not come up. The long and short is, put a new and appropriate subject title in.

Many thanks. Kathleen
