knowing full well that i may yet again be offending another few thousand
people (pretty efficient, you got to admit - one email and people are furious
with me in time zones around the globe) - BUT - there are often questions
like this one on lactnet - "will SYNDROME XYZ cause a mother to have a low
milk supply?" it is assumed, even by the lactation professional posing the
question, that whatever "syndrome xyz" is, yes, it could impact milk supply.
that is, the first reaction is yes, this could be a problem, i need proof
that it won't be.

what this means is, we don't trust breastfeeding if we automatically assume a
medical condition will affect it. we are looking at breastfeeding negatively
instead of positively.

when i saw that question, i had no doubts whatsoever about this mom's
potential milk supply in regards to the stroke. why? i have read an awful lot
of material about lactation and i have never seen anything that mentioned a
stroke as a possible inhibitor of milk supply. although it seems like a rare
event (and luckily, it is, in new mothers), it is still something that
happens often enough that we know quite well what the effect is.

of course, considering this mom's hospital experience, it is quite likely
that, as another post pointed out, she will experience problems that are
caused by other things besides her hx. of a stroke. in that sense, at least,
this woman is having, unfortunately, a completely normal experience.
