I don't think people are frightened of babies, I think they don't appreciate
and value them.  "They are little, they'll adapt, they'll outgrow it, etc."

Also, part of the problem is that babies don't have anyone to speak for
them.  They can't complain on their own.  Remember there used to be
unanesthetised surgery on infants!  Who would have tolerated that for adults
or older children!

When adults have trouble feeding, everyone can relate to what it is like to
go without the pleasure of eating.  Professionals and family members both
look out for the interests of the patient.  Even groups (advocates for
elderly, stroke patients, retarded persons, brain injury patients) support
issues of proper care.  If the adult patient recovers, they can sue for
improper treatment.

What can a baby do?   And who will hear?
