I am noticing more and more breastfeeding issues are the results of any 4-5
of the various tongue ties that are out there. It is now the first thing I
do when examining the baby. Some of the time I see a tie and mom and baby
are doing great! Or on occasion, a few weeks time the issue resolves. But
most of the time I refer out to an oral surgeon after examination of both
mom and baby and the results are amazing!!! I feel that breastfeeding is
natural and should be helped in natural ways but I feel a conflict of
interest if I send my babies to the oral surgeon when I see the posterior
ties causing problems. Is there anything else you guys do to help a mom and
baby transition into easier breastfeeding without a frenectomy? Many of the
babies I see are posterior and that is why the moms find me because no one
else knows how to fix their continual sore nipples, or recurrent mastitis,
or under supply issues or baby has a suck, swallow and breathe issue without
success until a frenectomy is recommended by me. Some moms and dads choose
not to have a frenectomy even though I explain the options of both sides in
detail it is still their choice. If I am seeing significant results with a
frenectomy does that mean the baby truly needed it? I just feel that sending
them to an oral surgeon however extremely helpful it has been, can I be
doing something else to help in a less invasive way? Just wanted to hear
your thoughts.
