I asked my dad (Native American from the Pueblo of Acoma, NM)about
breastfeeding.  He said that he recalls his family using the term,
"pee TEE sha" which literally means to "feed the baby."  This is a very
old term..

There was never any question of WHAT one would feed a baby, because
breastmilk was the only nutrition offered and the term breastfeeding is
a newer, modern term much like computer and there is no word in the
Keres Acoma Native American language for computer.

There are MANY different languages spoken among the various Native
American tribes and peoples.  To my knowledge, the Navajo Nation is the
only Native American language that is written.  All others are an oral
language only.  Several language classifications in NM include, Tewa,
Tiwa, and Towa, as well as Keres, Apache, Jicarilla, and of course,
Navajo. Some pueblos share the same language, but with different
regional vernacular differences.  Much like Spain spanish is very
different from Mexico spanish.
