Just a thought. I am new here so perhaps this has been discussed before. We
are seeing an increasing number of Moms whose mature milk is not coming in
until day 7 or 8. We have a very high incidence of Pitocin induced
deliveries. Many of the mothers are scheduled in at the convenience of the
doctors or for their own covenience so these are not Moms who are even in any
kind of labor yet. We have a theory that the body just isn't ready not only
for birth (i.e. the high Cesarean rate) but to produce milk. If we are
having these babies born before the mothers' hormones are at that place
doesn't it make sense that they are also not at the right place for producing
milk. I realize the separation of the placenta triggers the changes in the
hormones in the Post Partum period but even with the hormonal changes perhaps
the body just isn't there yet. Could anyone with a more indepth
understanding of the physiology comment on this. I just get so frustrated
with so many babies who can't or won't suck and so many Moms with not enough
milk. Another thought -- We have a high population of women who have
undergone fertility treatments in order to get pregnant. If their hormones
were out of whack enough to make it difficult to get pregnant, then wouldn't
this also affect their milk supply? One more thought -- We also have a
generally older population. If these Moms are in Perimenopause, wouldn't
that affect the
milk supply? Thanks for any comments.
