Personally, I am glad this recommendation is part of our usage
guidelines. Have you ever posted something and then when you read it
later get an entirely different impression from what your original
intent was? Then there are those typos that can change a meaning
entirely. (A classic one that happened to me was when I intended to say
"assets" and omitted the "t". Certainly made a big difference!) By
asking permission to pass something along, the original poster has the
opportunity to make any appropriate corrections. In addition, it feels
good to know that something you have said was important enough to
someone else that they want to pass it along. Also, I usually indicate
in my permission that I would like to be credited with the statement(s)
if they are being published. There are two reasons for this-first, I
can include it in my personnel folder at work in by "boquets and
brickbats" section. Secondly, if I were ever to decide to put my
thoughts in any formal writing, I have retained claim to them. (Not
sure if this is correct with copyright law, but it makes sense to me.)

Winnie
