I, too, have seen a variety of responses on the part of the baby.
We return the baby to Mom as soon as she wants him. (Sometimes they
take this opportunity to get in a quick shower.) Some Moms even
accompany baby to the circ room and watch.
I tell parents that baby may respond in any of several ways. He may
be cranky for a while; he may "tune the world out" for a while or it
may not seem to affect his behavior at all. If baby is fussy and
interested in the breast, she is certainly encouraged to offer it as
she would any time he shows an interest, but we don't specifically
"push" feeding right afterward. It is an intriguing idea, though,
and I may start suggestiing offering even if baby doesn't make the
request himself.
Incidentally, our docs (OBs unless baby will be followed up by a
family practitioner) use a variety of approaches in terms of pain
control. Some just whip through the procedure with nothing. Some
give injections of Lidocaine at the base of the penis and then wait
about 10 minutes. I have mixed feelings about the latter
approach-sometimes the injections themselves seem to offer as much
discomfort as the circ-babies are quieter for the circ, but really
complain dudring the injections. Shortly before I stopped doing
floor nursing (in favor of LC work) some docs started using a foam
dressing shortly before. This seemed to keep the little guys
happier. Sometimes when I would be the RN standing by during a circ
it would seem that the boys were complaining most about being
strapped to the circ board or being held down by the assistant.
They seem to have a protective instinct regarding that region of
their bodies even as newborns!
I wonder if the new JCAHO emphasis on pain control will be applied
to newborns?
Anyway, the point of all this is not to contribute to a debate
regarding circs, but to point out that the experience can be very
different from one baby to the next. Therefore, we should expect
that each boy will respond differently. One size does NOT fit all!
