Karen wrote about her sister's experience in which the nurses had provided her sister's baby with artificial baby milk without her sister's consent.

I am not sure how this works in the United States but I think that in Canada and I am sure that in Ontario, this is in violation of the code of ethics for nurses. Nurses are obligated to provide or to ensure that their clients have received informed consent prior to engaging in any intervention. Feeding artificial baby milk is an intervention, with unfortunate long and short term negative side effects.

Hopefully, when Karen's sister has gained some strength both physically and emotionally, she will write a letter or complaint regarding this serious violation. I would also recommend that her letter records the harmful effects of supplementation in the early post partum period. This might not only provide the mother with some closure but, in my experience, might begin an important change process in that ignorant institution.
