she should not be nursing during the night because the baby falls
asleep and the milk stays on his teeth. (Like they don't do that during the
day?)

my understanding has always been that babies who fall asleep bfing cannot
have the same pooling as babies who do w/ a bottle b/c the breast only has milk
coming out when baby is actively sucking. a bottle leaks constantly regardless
of whether baby is sucking or not. my own experience w/ both babies is that
once they fell alseep on the breast, if they sucked at all, it was a light,
fluttery suck that was more the memory of a suck than anything that would extract
milk. i also read somewhere that the nipple stretches so far toward the back
of the mouth during bfing that the teeth are not all bathed in milk as with
bottles, it almost shoots right down the back of the throat. at any rate, here is
a great article from mothering your mom may like to read.

Big Bad Cavities: Breastfeeding Is Not the Cause
(http://www.mothering.com/10-0-0/html/10-7-0/cavities.shtml)

the peds dentist quoted was our peds dentist until very recently, i sought
him out after assuming he is very pro extended bfing - having seen him quoted in
mothering articles on this subject more than once. unfortunately, as it turns
out he is pro bfing, but not pro extended bfing. all his literature also
recommends night weaning of a baby at 6 mos or upon the eruption of the 1st tooth,
whichever comes 1st. i have yet to find a peds dentist really advocating
extended bfing, if anyone knows of one and any literature they may have out, i
would love to be informed!
