Tricky situation but several things to consider: 
 
1.  Holding the infant near the breast also exposes child.  It's  not just a 
breastfeeding issue.  It's an exposure issue overall.
 
2.  If you haven't examined Hale closely on this, I recommend  it.  There are 
options of agents that lessen exposure that may work  for her.  It should be 
closely discussed with her physician to see if one  of these options are a 
possibility.  See pg. 420 - 423 of Hale's  "Medications and Mother's Milk."
 
3.  If she does have to move ahead with the scan, and she potentially  has 12 
weeks before it needs to be done, she has the option of breastfeeding and  
beginning to pump and build an "over" supply to store EBM enough to last for  
however long it is decided she should cease breastfeeding.  She could then  
relactate after that point and bring a supply back in.  
 
4.  Even if she does decide to only nurse for a short time, it's hard  to 
argue with the some is better than none theory.
