Dear Pat and lactnetters,
As regards the debate on Lactnet about the Woman Art of BF, as one
of you said, "different books for different readers". I found The WABF
had the attitudes and ideas, plus the concrete help, I needed back then
as a first-time Mum relactating in 1965, and living in a bottle-feeding
culture. Later, with more knowledge and experience I'd outgrown this
text - I was a different person, needing something a little more
intellectual and with references, like the Karen Pryor text. Later
still, as a different person again through further personal and
professional growth, I chose to read directly from the journals and
major professional texts, rather than from popular books for Mums. My
needs were different at different times.
The social and BF climate is also different today from in the 1960s.
There are many types of needs, and the old WABF fulfilled the needs for
many MUms of the period, even though for some the tone seemed a bit
smarmy.
    Cheers, Virginia
