I've been an LLL for about 18 years. I have had no problem with talking with
a physician about treatment plans, suggestions and ideas, despite my "lack
of credentials." I am treated with respect, because I expect respect and
give respect.

I am a lowly student nurse at the moment, and have no problem talking with
any physician about anything. Just in the past two nights, I "confronted" an
MD about orders written for a freshly discharged woman, orders changed, no
problem. I also discovered 2 medication errors (as written by an RN taking
order from an MD) and an oddity. I "confronted" the RN, who then spoke to
the MD. No problem, despite my "lack of credibility." I expected respect, I
gave respect, and I found respect.

In a modern day society, we are supposed to advocate for ourselves. If we do
not know enough about the subject to advocate for ourselves, we find someone
who knows more to advocate for us. Not only do I question getting my IBCLC
at this point, I question my nursing degree! As a LLLL, I was able to say,
suggest and do quite a bit.

Hope this comes to a resolution, and soon. Shake-ups might help an
organization, but earthquakes can rip it apart.

Best wishes,
Sam Doak
