While I agree that this "just keep trying" stuff is certainly not useful, I
have to say that around here the only other alternative seems to be to tell
moms "just give up." It drives me nutty to hear from the L & D nurses here
about docs recommending formula for everything from mild jaundice, to sleepy
baby, to tired mom! I am the only doc that regularly consults the LC.
Since she is available to any patient who asks, sometimes I can get the L&D
nurses to recommed her to other doc's patients, but otherwise there is
nothing I can do about it (at least for now. Eventually it will be my turn
to be dept. chair and maybe I can help with policy change.) Breastfeeding
is blamed for every ailment, yet with all the poor formula fed babies who
spit up constantly nobody suggests their food is the problem. The same
babies who are started willy-nilly on formula supplements are then not seen
until at least 2 weeks of age, by which time most moms have stopped
breastfeeding entirely. Then the doc is reinforced in their belief that
breastfeeding doesn't work out, and is even quicker to recommend formula the
next time.
Add to that the general lack of education, and the major textbooks which
have flaming bad advice (see Amy Kotler's post on Nelson's) and its a wonder
any baby gets breastfed around here.
Sorry, vent over!
