Lucy Brey and others,
Someone asked about conflict of interest and teaching a segment on
bottlefeeding in a prenatal series. Lucy, I lost your message when elec.
went out. But you said you thought that teaching bottlefeeding to a group
or class was a no no in Who code. I have the code book and on p.16,
article 4.2 it says you can teach, "where needed, the proper use of
infant formula" but you have to tell the hazards etc. No pictures or text
which idealizes use of br. milks substitutes. Also, p. 11 says that
health care systems and health professionals need to provide objective
and consistent advice "where needed, on the proper use of infant formula,
whether manufactured industrially or home-prepared." Then on p. 18,
article 6.5 "feeding with infant formula...should be demonstrated only by
health workers...and only to mothers or family members who need to use
it" and include hazards. How would you all interpret this re the
bottlefeeding in a prenatal class. Would this be the last thing taught,
with the breastfeeders being dismissed? Certainly no formula co. booklets
or videos should be shown. I welcome all commentary esp. from those more
familiar with code issues, as I feel we all need to learn more about this
important issue.
