First a brief introduction. My name is Karen Green and I'm just completing
my training with one of the British voluntary support organizations and have
been lurking and learning on Lactnet for a long time.

Regarding a useful analogy for breastfeeding: how about dialysis? It's a
mechanical/chemical imitation of a natural process (analogous to bottle and
AIM), everyone would agree that it doesn't work as well as functional
kidneys, and it can lead to a number of serious complications such as
infection, air embolism, electrolyte imbalance, cardiac ischemia or
arrhythmia, etc. If your own kidneys aren't working, however, and a donor
kidney isn't available (analogous to donor milk, perhaps?), it is a
life-saving intervention and no one would disparage it. If you had healthy
kidneys, no one would dream of touting dialysis as being "just as good", or
"the modern, scientific way to rid your body of impurities." And like
breasts, kidneys come in pairs but you can manage just fine with one if need
be. What do you think?
