Dear Friends:

I am collecting data on infant feeding practices in clinics; this means I
sit in clinic waiting rooms and interview mothers holding little babies.

I met a woman who started out bottle-feeding formula. She was so
uncomfortable and swollen after her milk volume increased (lactogenesis II) that she
persuaded her baby to breastfeed. Now, at one month postpartum, she's been
exclusively breastfeeding and happy about it. Her baby started out weighing 7
pounds 13 ounces, dropped down to 7 pounds, 10 ounces at hospital discharge, and
at the age of one month weighs 10 pounds.

While a 2 pound, 6 ounce gain might seem ordinary for such a baby, I was
impressed when I learned that the mother had been given depo-provera before she
went home from the hospital.

I wonder how many other cases there are such as this one?

warmly,
