. She has had three toddlers breastfed in her entire career - and she's
been working for over 20 years. This is a higly affluent, middle class
area with a high proprotion of intelligent older mothers. If anyone should
be seeing higher rates of toddler breastfeeding, she should. Mine being
the third in her career, makes me sad.

The problem is that the mothers aren't telling the HV. The mothers are
out there doing it [or in there doing it] . So the HV doesn't know. They
are probably pretty healthy and hitting the milestones so the HV
wouldn't be worried about them. If you hadn't needed to tell her would
you have done? It's quite understandable that mothers don't tell the HV if
they don't need to, if they are fearful of the response.
2nd time round I was more laid back, and remember one time when sitting
in the refreshments area of the toddler group with a nursing 2 year old,
another mother [of a 3 year old] came and said 'I thought I was the only one
in the world still feeding a toddler'. The HV didn't know, the doc didn't
know, no one knew. We chatted and I lent her mothering your nursing
toddler, and the little girl nursed until around her first birthday. I
still see them around and usually have a little chat. I guess you've got
to pick a spot where you will feel safe.
A local social worker I know also bf hers well into toddlerhood, so if
it ever comes up in her area she is a great resource for her colleagues
