Jennifer, I was wondering in your observations are these weight losses noted
in a 2-3 day old baby? I ask this because that is the average length of stay
for most babies born in the USA. So my next question is: are these weight
losses truly 10% loss or other factors such as accuracy of scales, human error,
excessive fluid load, timing of stooling and voids, ect?
If these weights are what you see in the office after a couple days
postpartum then I would be more concerned with a baby's feeding pattern and missed cues.
I have noted at where I work that all weights are done at midnight even if
the baby was born earlier in the evening. Now what do you do with a weight loss
only after a few hours? Is this really an accurate picture?
I remember Dr. Jack stating that one has to look at the whole picture and not
just one aspect of the picture when deciding whether to start interventions.
The lack of night time nursings is definitely a set up for potential problems
but I don't believe it is at fault for the weight loss.
