Hi All,

Boy am I frustrated! I have a mom with a 5 1/2 wk old baby. She is in a
real pickle. She has bi-lateral mastitis and a nasty urinary tract
infection. You won't believe what she's been told...
A Ped nurse told her that since she had mastitis, she could not BF the baby,
and to feed the baby Pedialite until the mastitis cleared. Her Dr.
prescribed Dicloxicillan for the Mastitis and told her she could not BF. :/
The Dr. also wants mom to take Cipro for the urinary tract infection (mom
has a history of bladder infections). This would definitely mean mom could
not BF. Mom refuses to take the Cipro and wants Dr. to find something else.
(she was on Diclox before for a bladder/U tract infec, but when she finished
the meds the infection came back)
This mom is so frustrated. Baby has been on Pedialite for 2 1/2 days (very
fussy!). Mom has not had a decent pump to pump with until today, and she
feels her milk supply is way down. Her breasts hurt from the Mastitis and
she feels like hell. I got her on a pumping schedule, told her to BF that
baby until a decision is made about a different Med for the U tract infec,
supplement with ABM as needed and pump after every feed. Am I forgetting
anything? Does she need to do anything else in this situaion to get things
back on track?
Is there a better med than Cipro for this infection that won't cause her to
have to pump and dump? Tom Hale, any ideas? Anyone?
I hate it when things like this happen! This is a first time mom, on
welfare, having to go to a clinic where the Drs can't even agree on
treatment. She feels she's been treated very poorly, and given BAD
information. She is going to complain loudly about the nurse who told her to
feed her baby pedialite until the mastitis clears. (my mastitis lasted for 4
months. Can you imagine a baby surviving on that for 4 months? NOT!) She
is actually a smart lady, who is very concerned about her and her baby's
health, and doesn't want to use ABM if at all possible. Does anyone have
any other ideas for me to help her?

My 10 yr old son heard the entire conversation I had with this gal, and when
I got off the phone he asked me about the bad info given to this mom by the
health care people. He then said that ALL Drs, nurses, anyone who works in
medicine should have "extensive" (his words) training in BF and meds that are
compatible with BF! He said they shouldn't be allowed to practice until they
had this training! Smart kid! Glad he's mine!

Thanks for letting me vent a bit, and any info Re: a different Med and any
other ideas for this gal will be greatly appreciated!
TIA,
Jay Simpson
